The 22nd East Africa International Trade Exhibition (EAITE) on multi-sector products, equipment & machinery is the largest trade event held annually in Tanzania, the hub of the vast East African market. The exhibition attracts exhibitors from more than 30 countries and visitors from all over East & Central Africa, thus giving exhibitors an excellent opportunity to explore several countries at one time.

Over the past few years, Tanzania has emerged as a major regional trade centre. This is mainly due to the very friendly and businesslike atmosphere it offers to foreign investors and products. Duties are considerably low and re-exports to neighboring countries are either very low or exempted.

About Tanzania

The United Republic of Tanzania is located in eastern Africa on the Indian Ocean between Mozambique and Kenya and includes the island of Zanzibar. Its largest city, Dar es Salaam, is located along the eastern coast on the Indian Ocean. The capital Dodoma lies west of Dar-es-Salaam.

Tanzania covers an area roughly twice the size of California. The terrain includes coastal plains, a central plateau, and highlands in the north and south. It is home to Mt. Kilimanjaro ( the highest point in Africa ) , Lake Victoria ( the second largest lake in the world), and the Great Rift Valley. The climate varies from tropical along the coast to temperate in the highlands. Natural resources include hydropower, tin, phosphates, iron ore, coal, diamonds, gemstones, gold, natural gas, and nickel.

Population. Around 55 million people live in Tanzania. Kiswahili or Swahili (Kiunguju in Zanzibar) and English are the official languages; Arabic and numerous other local languages are spoken as well. The population is overwhelmingly native African (99%), most of whom are Bantu (95%). Religious practices on the mainland include: Christian (30%), Muslim (35%), and indigenous beliefs (35%).

Over the past few years, Tanzania has emerged as a major regional trade centre. This is mainly due to the very friendly and businesslike atmosphere it offers to foreign investors and products. Duties are considerably low and re-exports to neighboring countries are either very low or exempted.

Tanzanian Economy

Tanzania’s primarily agrarian economy is constrained by geography and environmental factors such as low and erratic rainfall, soil erosion and deforestation. Only 8 percent of Tanzania’s land is under cultivation, although about 80% of its population is employed in agriculture. The principal cash crops of coffee, cotton, sisal and tobacco have been affected by instability in the world market demand and rising costs of imported fuel, fertilizers, and equipment.

At 7%, in 2016, Tanzania’s economy is expanding quickly, putting it close to the top of the fastest growing economies in Sub-Saharan Africa. This expansion softened during the last quarter of 2016, however, and continued to do so into 2017.
Since entering office, President Magufuli has reoriented public expenditure toward development spending, reducing recurrent expenditure significantly, and intensifying efforts to mobilize domestic revenue. Government spending was cut back, and a cap put in place on the salaries of executive officers. New measures were also introduced to control tax exemptions.

Currency : GDP: $47.43 billion, GDP per capita: $879.19, GDP growth rate:7% Inflation rate: 5.17% Labor force: 80% agricultural; 20% services and industry

Natural resources: hydropower, tin, phosphates, iron ore, diamonds, gemstones, gold, natural gas, nickel Agriculture: Coffee, sisal, tia, cotton, pyrenthurm, cashews, tobacco, cloves, wheat, fruit, vegetables, livestock Industry: agricultural processing, mining, oil refining, shoes, cement, textiles, wood products, fertilizer, salt. 18 May 2019

Istanbul Africa Trade Company at the Oxford Africa Conference

Burak Unal, Director of African Markets, participated in the Oxford Africa Conference 18 May 2019 at the University of Oxford Blavatnik School of Government. The conferences and networking events were at the main theatre of the Blavatnik School of Government.

About the Conference

The Oxford Africa Conference is the leading interdisciplinary conference on Africa, hosted by the University of Oxford Africa Society. The Conference brings together heads of state, policymakers, business leaders, academics, artists, students, and professionals of African descent to critically expand the discourse and action on Africa. The conference is also the society’s annual call to action: the opportunity for coalescing ideas and initiatives that can augment and create opportunities for African individuals, companies and organisations.

This year’s conference convenes around the theme Africa’s Relevance: Locally, Continentally and Globally.

Africa’s Relevance: Locally, Continentally and Globally

The theme of this year’s conference is Africa’s Relevance: Locally, Continentally and Globally” . In its 9 th year running, this year’s conference will convene around the theme Asserting Africa’s Relevance: Locally, Continentally and Globally. Through a series of interactive panels, keynote addresses and debates, we will explore pathways to asserting Africa’s relevance by:

  • The first track will take stock of the diverse indigenous assets that exist across the continent, whether in terms of artistic tradition or governance models, whilst casting a critical eye on the concept of indigeneity.
  • The second track will address the question of Africa’s relevance as a continental unit and take a deep dive into the multiple aspects of integration ranging from the tangible, such as institutions and roads, to the intangible such as Pan African identity and political ideologies.
  • The third track will explore Africa’s place in the world. Building on our indigenous assets and our conception of what constitutes a coherent geographical and political unit, where does, and where should, Africa fit in broader multilateralism? How can Africa be a resilient and influential global player and partner?

This year is a particularly exciting year for the conference as it marks several monumental milestones such as the 100th year anniversary of the 1919 Pan- African Conference, the 400th year anniversary of the 1619 arrival of enslaved African Americans, and the declaration of the United Nations Decade of People of African Descent. The Conference is held at a crucial moment in time, in the midst of a critical global discourse on Africa and Africans in the diaspora.

Students, academics, innovators and trailblazers are invited to explore the challenges of Africa’s 21st century realities and chart ways forward for the prosperity of Africa. We value the strengths of Pan-African knowledge and highly encourage attendees to use this conference as an opportunity to learn, participate and share their knowledge.

3 April 2019

Istanbul Africa Trade Company at the LSE Africa Summit

Burak Unal, Director of African Markets, participated in the LSE Africa Summit on 30-31 March 2019 at the London School of Economics and Political Science. The conferences and networking events were at New Academic Building  Sheikh Zayed Theatre.

About the Summit

Since its founding in 2014, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) annual two-day conference has established itself as a leading destination for many professionals, students, and corporates in the continent and diaspora alike. By gathering renowned scholars, leading politicians, forward-thinking corporate and entrepreneurial minds together with our population of highly capable and passionate students at the LSE, the Summit provides a unique platform for the sharing of ideas and development of relationships that can be translated into meaningful action. The LSE Africa Summit prides itself on being rooted in present realities, as it takes into account the dynamism and contextual framework on the continent and thus, promotes solutions with an African perspective.

Promoting Financial Inclusion in Africa

In the last five years, the global banking industry has seen a decrease in its global revenue growth rate. Africa’s banking sector, in contrast, is fast growing and is valued as twice as profitable as the global average. However, over 350 million adults are unbanked in Sub-Saharan Africa. In this region alone, this represents approximately 17% of the global total.

Financial inclusion initiatives such as Mobile Money, Women Banking and Islamic Banking are now thriving in Africa. At the end of 2016 there were 227 million registered mobile money accounts, more than their total number of bank accounts in the continent. Mobile Money, for example, has provided a solution for small and medium entrepreneurs, who are often disadvantaged when it comes to access to financial systems. Similarly, Islamic banking has met the demand of Africa’s 250 million Muslims on the continent. The panel seeks to highlight the importance of financial inclusion and explore the current strategies and opportunities for providing access to finance for marginalised African citizens. In addition, there will be a further exploration of existing financial inclusion initiatives and their role in promoting a financially inclusive Africa.
Featuring an eclectic mix of the continent’s leading thinkers, this panel explores these monumental steps on the journey towards integration by dissecting the prodigious pitfalls, and most importantly, outlining the potential benefits to the continent’s largest hope and demographic; its youth.

9 March 2019

Istanbul Africa Trade Company at the Forum

Burak Unal, Director of African Markets, participated in the Oxford Business Forum Africa on 8-9 March 2019 at the University of Oxford. The Gala dinner took place at the Balliol College, University of Oxford. The conferences and networking events were at Said Business School, University of Oxford.

Single Market, Global Outcomes

The Oxford Business Forum Africa brings together distinguished leaders from top companies, innovative start-ups, government, and civil society from across Africa.

In March 2018, 44 African countries signed the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). The U.N. Economic Commission on Africa suggests that intra-African trade is likely to increase by 52.3% and may double with further removal of non-tariff barriers. This year’s forum focused on the impact of the AfCFTA regarding integrated trade and movement of people across Africa. Can we develop the infrastructure and harness local talent to compete for global value chains? Does the AfCFTA enhance appetite for African investment?

The Forum highlighted the potential effects the AfCFTA may have on the development and ease of doing business across Africa. When examined independently, many African countries may not be economically viable and attractive to global market players. However, under the single market framework of the AfCFTA the continent’s prospect for global production, value chain management and consumption capacity rises.

Delegates and Speakers from the Public and Private Sector in Africa

The Forum featured keynote addresses, focused panel discussions, and networking opportunities. Convening around 350 delegates and a number of thought leaders as speakers, the Forum offered unrivalled insight into business on the continent from the boldest innovators and decision makers in Africa.

About the Africa’s Business Revolution Report

For global and Africa-based companies looking to access new growth markets, Africa offers exciting opportunities to build large, profitable businesses. Its population is young, fast-growing, and increasingly urbanized—while rapid technology adoption makes the continent a fertile arena for innovation. Brimming with company case studies and exclusive interviews with 40 of Africa’s most prominent executives and development leaders, this book comes to life with the vibrant stories of those who have navigated the many twists and turns on the road to building successful businesses on the continent.

Combining an unrivaled fact base with expert advice on shaping and executing an Africa growth strategy, this book is required reading for global business executives wanting to expand their existing operations in Africa—and for those seeking a roadmap to access this vast, untapped market for the first time.
